Major life changes — even positive ones — are among the most common triggers for mental health challenges. Understanding why transitions are hard can make them more manageable.

Why Transitions Are Hard

Transitions disrupt three things our brains depend on: predictability (what happens next), identity (who am I in this new context), and belonging (where do I fit). Even positive changes — a promotion, moving to a new city, becoming a parent — can destabilize all three at once.

Common Transitions That Affect Mental Health

  • Starting or ending a major relationship
  • Job loss, career change, or retirement
  • Moving to a new city or country
  • Becoming a parent or caregiver
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Health diagnosis (yours or someone close)
  • Leaving or finishing education

What Tends to Help

Name what’s changing. Getting specific about what is actually different — not just “everything” — makes the challenge more workable. Allow the grief. Even good transitions involve loss. Leaving a job you loved means losing colleagues, routine, and identity. That’s worth acknowledging. Rebuild structure. New routines — even small ones — restore a sense of predictability faster than willpower alone. Stay connected. Isolation during transitions amplifies difficulty. Social support buffers the impact of change significantly.

When to Seek Support

If difficulty sleeping, persistent low mood, anxiety, or withdrawal persists for more than two weeks — or if the transition is connected to loss or trauma — working with a licensed counselor can help significantly. Transition-focused therapy is a recognized and effective approach.
